چکیده مقاله:
Background: Enterococci are important gram-positive bacteria causing dental calculus in human beings; however, the role of these bacteria in oral cavity is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Enterococcal Surface Protein (esp) gene in Enterococcus faecalis isolated from dental calculus in the city of Sari, Iran. Materials and Methods: In the present study, 207 dental calculus samples were collected from patients. The isolates were identified by growth on Bile Esculin agar, Gram stain, Catalase test, Growth at 6.5% NaCl, PYR and arabinose fermentation test. Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of the isolates was determined by disk agar diffusion method. The presence of esp gene was assessed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: Among the 56 (27%) enterococci isolated from dental calculus, 43 (76.7%) were determined as E. faecalis. The resistance rate to ampicillin, vancomycin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and erythromycin in E. faecalis isolates was estimated as 13.9%, 4.6%, 11.6%, 6.9% and 13.9%, respectively. The esp gene was detected in 18.6% of E. faecalis isolates. Among the isolates containing esp gene, 33.3%, 50%, 40%, 33.3% and 33.3% of them were resistant to ampicillin, vancomycin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and erythromycin, respectively. Conclusion: E. faecalis is an important organism causing dental calculus but the presence of esp gene had no correlation with the resistance to tested antimicrobial agents.

The enterococcal surface protein, Esp, is involved in Enterococcus faecalis biofilm formation.
The enterococcal surface protein, Esp, is a high-molecular-weight surface protein of unknown function whose frequency is significantly increased among infection-derived Enterococcus faecalis isolates. The enterococcal surface protein, Esp, originally found in Enterococcus faecalis, has been associated with increased virulence, colonization, and biofilm formation (2, 3, 5, 6). Recently, a variant esp gene was found in Enterococcus faecium isolates from humans (L. Baldassarri, L. Burtuccini, M. G. Ammendolia, G. Gherardi, and R. Creti, Letter, Lancet 357:1802, 2001; R. J. متن کاملInfection-derived Enterococcus faecalis strains are enriched in esp, a gene encoding a novel surface protein.
We report the identification of a new cell wall-associated protein of Enterococcus faecalis. Studies on the distribution of the gene encoding this novel surface protein, Esp, reveal a significant (P < 0.001) enrichment in infection-derived E. faecalis isolates. Interestingly, the esp gene was not identified in any of 34 clinical E. faecium isolates or in 4 other less pathogenic enterococcal spe...

Background: In recent years, three new aminoglycoside resistance genes such as aph (3ʹ)-IIIa and ant (4ʹ)-Ia, that encode for the APH (3ʹ) and ANT (4ʹ) have also been identified. The aim of this study was to come up with a multiplex-PCR procedure for detection of aac(6ʹ)-Ie–aph(2ʹʹ)-Ia, aph(3ʹ)-IIIa, ant(4ʹ)-Ia genes in the Enterococcus spp. clinical isolates. PURPOSE This study was conducted in order to determine the occurrence of esp and biofilm formation among Enterococcus faecalis causing mastitis isolated from different bovine and environmental origins. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 41 E. faecalis isolates were obtained from clinical mastitis before antibiotic therapy, subclinical mastitis, dried manure bedding samples, and postpartum milk ...
